“I would kill my mother if I had the courage” (Kincaid 87). As the novel progress, Annie and her mother start to have disconnections. Her love for her mother is so deep that is blindsided by the changes that come into their relationship as Annie begins to come of age. It is seen here that Annie and her mother had a very close relationship, and that Annie felt great joy in just being with her mother. This scene demonstrates how Annie connection with her mother as a child.
At the beginning of the novel Annie has a very deep connection to her mother, Annie says “My mother and I often took a bath together…how important I felt to be with my mother” (Kincaid 17). In Kincaid’s writing of Annie John, the character Annie John demonstrates an ambivalence toward her mothers and toward her homeland Antigua, sometimes embracing, sometimes rejecting. The mother throughout this novel plays a big part in the development of Annie John’s character. Annie John wants to be educated but not brainwashed by the library because it does still have aspects of British rule that can negatively influence her.
Creating one’s identity becomes a balancing act, in which a person attempts to discover his/her self through his/her connection to the land, yet rejects those destructive elements which have taken hold as a result of colonization from the land. This act explains her strong eagerness to not lose her culture and understanding of language even when British colonial power is always posing threat to her development as women. Annie John says “after reading a book, whether I liked it or not, I couldn’t bear to part with it’ (Kincaid 43). In Annie John’s case, the library is very symbolic to her, in that she loves it so much that she steals the books that she reads. The library not only promotes the progress of knowledge, but it is also important because it has effects on cultures, innovation, and individuals. In Kincaid’s novel Annie John the character Annie John seeks to gain more knowledge about the world and she does this by going to the library very often. The most devastating effect of colonization is the loss of culture and language. Culture and language play a big part in forming individuals identities and allows for people to form perspectives of things for themselves.
